It was October 4, 2001 in Houston. The Astros' pitching staff had walked Barry Bonds an incredible eight times in the three-game series. The hometown fans at Enron Field were booing their own team loudly for failing to throw any strikes to Mr. Bonds, because those fans wanted to see some history! Barry had entered the series with 69 home runs - just one tantalizing dinger away from the magical 70 - and because of all of the walks, he was still stuck at that number. And now it was Bonds' last at bat before leaving town, and the natives were certainly restless.
But aided by the straight-as-a-string fastballs of raw rookie Wilfredo Rodriguez, Barry didn't disappoint the fans in that last at bat. Expert photographer Jim McKinnis was there to capture the record-tying blast, as Bonds sent the ball flying into the upper deck in right field, thereby allowing #25 to reach the rarified air of 70 home runs. This extra, extra-wide multi-exposure photo painting catches the power and exhilaration of the moment.
