New on the site
We appreciate every single visitor who looks around Baseballparks.com, and we're proud to announce that visitor number 2.5 million gave us a look this week ... Following a swing through Northern California, I posted "photo albums" of the newly renamed Overstock.com Coliseum in Oakland, and Modesto's lovely John Thurman Field, which is the home of the Cal League Nuts. No, I'm not making that up. I hadn't attended games in either park for several years, and there were a lot of new things to see at each.
Killebrew a true ballpark hero
It's a shame today's younger fans aren't familiar with players of yesterday who were tremendous role models. One example is Harmon Killebrew (shown here at last year's Rickwood Classic), who played with class and didn't take steroids to become one of the game's greatest sluggers. Alas, he is about to lose his battle with cancer. Please read this touching remembrance of him from Jim Salisbury.
It's been a crazy few weeks: Frisco, Pittsburgh, Charleston WV, Ohio U, Ohio State, Columbus, Cincy, Chicago (Cubs), Omaha (TD Ameritrade Park), Omaha Storm Chasers, Texas A&M, Round Rock, Oakland, Modesto and Arlington, Texas. Next up, my hometown Round Rock Express on the 21st. Let me know any time you'll be attending the same game as me.
The LA Times weighs in
Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times provides his ten best and six worst ballparks in the Majors. I think he has new Yankee Stadium and Angel Stadium way too high, and Wrigley ridiculously too low. He does have PNC Park (right) at the top, so I'll give him credit for that. Go to our Facebook page and voice your opinion about his picks.
Big League ballpark notes
As if Citizens Bank Park (left) didn't have enough capacity crowds, the NHL announced that it will host next season's Winter Classic. The Flyers will host the Rangers in this outdoor event on January 2nd, 2012 ... "The Great Fan Escape" occurred at Minute Maid Park Friday evening, as an acrobatic fan evaded security personnel ... Wait staff at new Yankee Stadium are suing the Yanks' catering company. They claim patrons are being charged for gratuities that aren't then passed along to the servers ... The White Sox are opening a huge, two-level store at US Cellular Field. The 13,000-square-foot souvenir shop will be open year round ... MLB parks are being used for more and more non-baseball events (like hockey games, above), including a classic-car show at Comerica Park on July 30th ... The former spring-training home of the Rockies, Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, hosted a Minor League game last week.
